Welcome to National City Adult School! We are a part of the Sweetwater Union High School District Adult Education Division. The District is located in the southern portion of San Diego County, stretching to the Mexican border. The communities of the area are close to a number of significant recreational and cultural venues that are located throughout the county and adjacent areas. The total population of the District is approximately half a million residents. Although the current economic climate has had a negative effect on population growth, it is expected that there will be over 600,000 residents within twenty years.
The District has 32 schools, in grades 7-12, with over 42,000 students and is the largest secondary school district in the state. The cities of Bonita, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro and South San Diego are served by the District.
The Adult Education Division of the Sweetwater Union High School District has been in existence for seventy-eight years and ranks as the 4th largest adult school in the State of California, with a posted Average Daily Attendance (ADA) CAP of 6,452 in 2008 school year. The Division annually provides adult learning opportunities to over 35,000 students at four primary school sites, Chula Vista Adult School, Montgomery Adult School, National City Adult School, and San Ysidro Adult School.
National City Adult School, orginally known as Sweetwater Evening High School, opened in 1933 on the northeast corner of the Sweetwater High School campus. In the late 1990’s Assistant Superintendent of Adult and Continuting Education, Jerry R. Rindone, created an innovative three-way partnership between the Sweetwater Union High School District, the City of National City and the Metropolitan Transit Development Board. They collaborated to build the National City Adult Education Center.
The National City Redevelopment Agency provided $3.4 million of the cost, with the remaining $2.5 million coming from the District’s adult education fund. MTDB provided the land to the District through a 55 year lease at $1 year. Located adjacent to the 24th Street Trolley Station, a major transit hub, National City Adult School‘s campus location provides students with convenient bus and trolley access.
